Where Archaeologists Dig
An archaeologist knows where to dig by thinking that in order for someone to have lived somewhere they need to be able to get water easily, routes for trade and migration, and a good supply of food nearby. They also find out where to dig if someone like a farmer or builder finds something where they are farming and building. And lastly, with history books and maps they can find out where to dig.
